Jan L. Bernstein

Partner

Jan L. Bernstein, a partner in the Firm, serves as Chair of the Family Law Group and a member of the Executive Committee. Jan has dedicated herself to the successful representation of family law clients and the development of strong client relationships. She is renowned for finding creative solutions for people to resolve their family law disputes. Her newest initiative is the launch of a mediation and arbitration program in which family lawyers from Riker Danzig will work in gender neutral teams to resolve disputes. These Panels provide an option for clients to have a fair, efficient, and private setting to serve their family law needs.

After graduating from Rutgers Law School, Jan has been appointed to five NJ Supreme Court Committees, including the Judicial Performance Committee, on which she currently serves. In addition, she served on the Judicial and Prosecutorial Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association, is past Chair of the Women’s Rights Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association, and was a member of the Editorial Board of the New Jersey Lawyer Magazine, and the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Lawyer newspaper. Jan has spoken at conferences and seminars on the topics of family law and gender issues. She also has had several articles published in the New Jersey Family Lawyer, as well as other publications. One of her articles is cited in NJ Statutes Annotated, entitled “Moving On After Moving In: The Case for Including Unmarried Partners in New Jersey Family Law.” She has been elected a life member of The National Registry of Who’s Who (pub. 2000 Ed.), Strathmore’s Who’s Who (pub. 2000-2001 Ed.), and Marquis’ Who’s Who in American Law (pub. 2000 Ed.) Best Lawyers in America® has named her one of the leading family law attorneys in New Jersey and Law & Politics magazine named her one of New Jersey's "Super Lawyers."

Jan is also very involved at her alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania. She is an Associate Trustee of the University, appointed by the University President as a member of the Trustee Council of Penn Women and is a former member of the Board of Athletic Advisors. Jan was captain of the tennis team in her sophomore, junior, and senior years at the University of Pennsylvania. She was inducted into the University of Pennsylvania Tennis Hall Of Fame in its inaugural class, and also was inducted into the Tenafly High School Athletic Hall Of Fame in October 2005. She received the Fathers Trophy her senior year at the University of Pennsylvania for the outstanding female scholar-athlete of the University.

Jan is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Family Law Section and the Morris County Bar Association’s Family Law Committee.
